Thing are moving along apace at the Old School Yard conversion!
The shaped beds are now in place and planting has been started, although ‘cages’ have had to be put around the young ferns and grasses due to the local sparrows taking a fancy to them for nesting material!
Jon Bateson and Nick Eames are working between them on the bench in memory of David Johnson, following a lovely design from Simon Richards of Land Studio. Two ideas were submitted to Carole, David’s wife, and the option shown here is the one she chose.
The materials for the bench are all locally sourced: the stone was donated by Rachel and Huw Jones from Brynford (Phil and Val Higgins’ daughter and son-in-law), and it was transported to Cilcain by Will Topley.
The oak is Welsh and comes from the hills behind Abergele – this was from a particularly slow-growing mountain oak, which means that the timber is very dense and heavy.
