{"id":2352,"date":"2013-11-06T18:02:08","date_gmt":"2013-11-06T18:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/?p=2352"},"modified":"2013-11-06T18:02:08","modified_gmt":"2013-11-06T18:02:08","slug":"exciting-finds-at-st-marys-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/?p=2352","title":{"rendered":"Exciting finds at St. Mary&#039;s!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some intriguing pieces of\u00a0stone work were discovered during recent renovation work at St. Mary&#8217;s Church in Cilcain, when\u00a0stone was removed from the Church wall to carry out repairs to\u00a0the crack\u00a0which had developed above the South window in the chancel.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/newsite.cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-0900441.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2358 aligncenter\" alt=\"St Mary-090044\" src=\"http:\/\/newsite.cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-0900441.jpg?w=209\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-0900441.jpg 559w, https:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-0900441-210x300.jpg 210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThere are several pieces of very early medieval tomb stones which have been on display at the back of the church.\u00a0 One of these pieces was headless and thus there is no doubt that this newly found piece is the missing head &#8211; you can see the two pieces married together in the left hand picture below.\u00a0 The piece of stone on the right which has the sheep shears incised on it looks\u00a0most likely\u00a0to have been part of a tomb stone.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/newsite.cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090001.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2354 alignleft\" alt=\"St Mary-090001\" src=\"http:\/\/newsite.cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090001.jpg?w=225\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090001.jpg 600w, https:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090001-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/newsite.cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090006.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2356 alignright\" alt=\"St Mary-090006\" src=\"http:\/\/newsite.cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090006.jpg?w=300\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090006.jpg 800w, https:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090006-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cilcainvillagehall.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/st-mary-090006-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nIt is uncertain\u00a0when these stones were used as building material; they could possibly have been used when previous repairs were made to the exterior of the wall, or when the south aisle of the church was built in the late 14th or 15th century.\u00a0 Other old pieces of early medieval stone were found when the church was restored in the late 19th century by Douglas the Chester architect.<br \/>\nThese stones had also been used as door lintels or in other ways in the fabric of the church.\u00a0 The remains of a water stoup, or font, were found below the pulpit which had been on the South side of the church.<br \/>\nSt. Mary&#8217;s has now re-opened following the repair work\u00a0and the various pieces of recovered stone work can be seen\u00a0at the back of the Church.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some intriguing pieces of\u00a0stone work were discovered during recent renovation work at St. Mary&#8217;s Church in Cilcain, when\u00a0stone was removed from the Church wall to carry out repairs to\u00a0the crack\u00a0which had developed above the South window in the chancel.
